Hybrids

A hybrid writing piece is where writing is mixed with some other type of art form. As someone who doesn't view herself as artistic, I have always avoided hybrid pieces. However, in the fall of 2024, I took a class with Professor Claudia Manley and had the opportunity to create a hybrid piece. I did a video hybrid but after her class, I ventured into another hybrid and am currently working on a third hybrid piece with a fourth in the planning stages—the next two being planned art pieces like the second one was.

I have definitely caught the bug of thinking of my pieces in more ways than simply as words on white paper.

Academic Papers

Originally written for a GSWS (Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies) class, it is an exploration of suicide letters starting with the suicide letter written by my grandfather. From there, I explore the generational trauma linked to mental health and the loose leaf papers torn from notebooks decades old.

It is a hybrid poem with a poem, a sculpture, academic analysis, and artist explaination of the piece itself.

This hybrid piece includes a short creative non fiction story about finding myself through my own photographs, starting with the snapshot of a toad that I took at the Toronto Zoo. From the story, I gathered photos of myself as a little girl as well as a number of photos I have taken since I was 15 years old.

Both are reproduced in a video that I created.
